Not only is ABCtv rebranding as ABC1, as well as getting a new logo (seen above) but it is moving to a new location on the digital platform in some metropolitan areas.
From the beginning of Feburary, you will find ABC1 located on LCN (channel) 21 on digital. This is currently the home of ABC2, but don’t worry, because ABC2 is moving to LCN 22.
The Full ABC digital channel lineup from Feburary will be:
02 – ABC1 SD (relay)
20 – ABC1 HD (720p – selected programming, refer to guides)
21 – ABC1 SD
22 – ABC2
200 – DIG Radio – info at abc.net.au/dig
201 – DIG Jazz Radio – info at abc.net.au/dig/jazz

The URL for dig Jazz is wrong. It should be abc.net.au/dig/jazz.

Yuck!

The ‘1′ is OK but the ABC typeface looks awful and out of balance beside it.
Perhaps they could’ve used a background shape based on part of the existing ABC logo and put the ‘1′ in white on top of that, and then placed that next to the existing ABC logo. And then done the same for ‘2′ and a possible ‘3′ as well. Colour code them. Simple and elegant.
The ‘1′ reminds me of German TV’s Das Erste channel logo http://www.daserste.de/ (top left of screen in the small circle)

What is the deal with the relay station? Will it simply be a simulcast of the SD offering on ch 21, offer a time delay, or something else entirely?
January 29, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Dan, it will be simply a simulast of 21, as it is currently (of 22)
January 29, 2008 at 10:11 pm
A time delay of two hours would be great, if only because I so rarely get to see The 7:30 Report.

So you mean ABC will remove its Current Lissajous ident?
January 30, 2008 at 2:05 am
So Channel 2 will become ABC1? No thanks. Yeah, it does remind me of Germany’s Das Erste.
It’s an obvious copy of the BBC format.
You could call Radio National something like … oh I don’t know… Radio 4?
Classic FM could be radio 3
Maybe Sydney702 will become Radio Five Live?!
January 30, 2008 at 7:03 am
@imbestigador: I am certain that they wil continue to use the lissajous prominantly…but how prominantly we will have to wait till next week to see.
@ Greg: Funny you should say that, because up until a couple of decades ago, Radio National *was* called ‘Radio 2′ and Local radio was called ‘Radio 1′…so they’ve gone the other direction on Radio.

It’s crap what a stupid idea out of all Australia branding you would think the ABC would know how powerful there own logo was.
Must of used some two bit agency to come up with a stupid scheme like that. Hope you didn’t pay too much for it looks like a school kid designed.
Very dissapointed in the quality of design if that’s what you would even call it.

Thanks for your reply…
How I wish The ABC will not remove their Lissajous ident…,Their Ident is more than 40 years old.

The old lissajous will be included in the ID adjacent to it. I think the naming by numbers lacks imagination although it holds the brand together as used by the BBC and CBC.
But using original names like Fly tv, Triple J, Classic or RN gives the network a better sense of diversity.
